➤ The sustainable main material: Bamboo
Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants in the world and thrives primarily in tropical and subtropical regions. The resilient, hollow stalks are harvested by hand and sun-dried, which gives them their exceptional strength. The bamboo is then cut into thin strips or used whole to create durable and stylish products such as furniture, baskets, and lampshades. With its lightweight yet sturdy structure, bamboo is the perfect material for handcrafted home accessories. Furthermore, bamboo is extremely environmentally friendly, as it grows without the use of pesticides and serves as a sustainable resource that contributes to the preservation of biodiversity in its growing areas.
Other material: rattan
➤ Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria
This lampshade is handmade in Java, Indonesia.
When selecting our local production partners, we prioritize fair wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small, family-run businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. All of them are experienced, adult craftspeople. Older people, especially those no longer able to work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in these crafts, as they can use their skills, acquired early in life, to earn a living and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living. Because all work is done by hand, the production process generates virtually no greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the businesses.
➤ The production process: From raw material to finished lampshade
Our Kirma lampshades are handcrafted by experienced artisans on the Indonesian island of Java. The bamboo used is first dried and then cut into pieces.
