➤ The sustainable main material: rattan
This rapidly renewable raw material is obtained from rattan palms, which grow as climbing plants in the tropical forests of Indonesia. Their branches and trunks are harvested by hand without damaging the surrounding trees and then dried. The inner part of the branches and trunks is used in varying thicknesses for furniture, baskets, or lamps, while the bark is cut into strips and used for delicate weaving, such as the well-known Viennese wickerwork. Because rattan palms require an intact ecosystem to grow, rattan processing provides an incentive for the local population to maintain healthy, natural forests.
➤ Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria
When selecting our local production partners, we prioritize fair wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small, family-run businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. All of them are experienced, adult craftspeople. Older people, especially those no longer able to work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in these crafts, as they can use their skills, acquired early in life, to earn a living and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living. Because all work is done by hand, the production process generates virtually no greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the businesses.
➤ The production process: From raw material to finished vase
Our Kidung vases are meticulously handcrafted by skilled artisans on the Indonesian island of Lombok. During their production, thick rattan fibers are intricately woven with narrow strips of rattan bark to create the vase's unique texture. The vase is then evenly sprayed with a warm brown hue. Each vase takes approximately three hours to complete and requires considerable patience and craftsmanship.
