➤ The sustainable main material: Trembesi

Trembesi, also known as rain tree wood, originates from South America. This means that no rainforest needs to be cleared for its harvest in Indonesia. The fast-growing trees are typically planted for decorative purposes in urban areas, where their branches are regularly pruned to control growth. The wood is then reused, often for furniture production. Our Trembesi wood has a similar color and grain to teak but boasts a much better sustainability profile.

Other material: rattan

➤ Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria

This stool is handmade in Java, Indonesia.

When selecting our local production partners, we prioritize fair wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small, family-run businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. All of them are experienced, adult craftspeople. Older people, especially those no longer able to work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in these crafts, as they can use their skills, acquired early in life, to earn a living and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living. Because all work is done by hand, the production process generates virtually no greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the businesses.

➤ The production process: from raw material to finished stool

Our Subang stools are handcrafted in the workshops of experienced carpenters in the Indonesian province of Central Java. The wood is first dried and then cut into boards, which are shaped into legs and seats before being assembled, sanded, and varnished. The woven seat is supplied by a specialized weaver. Making a single stool takes approximately four to four hours.
