➤ The sustainable main material: rattan
This rapidly renewable raw material is obtained from rattan palms, which grow as climbing plants in the tropical forests of Indonesia. Their branches and stems are harvested by hand without damaging the surrounding trees and then dried. The inner core of the branches and stems is used in various thicknesses for furniture, baskets, or lamps, while the bark is cut into strips and used for delicate basketry, such as the well-known "Vienna weaver's basket." Because rattan palms require an intact ecosystem to grow, rattan processing incentivizes local communities to preserve healthy, natural forests.
➤ The production process: From raw material to finished lampshade
Our Arana lampshades are meticulously handcrafted by skilled artisans on the Indonesian island of Bali. The process begins with hand-forming a sturdy metal frame to create a stable base. Thin, long strands of rattan are then carefully woven into the frame with expert precision. To ensure durability, strips of rattan bark are used to firmly secure the fibers. Each lampshade takes approximately three hours to make, showcasing the remarkable patience and craftsmanship of the artisans.
➤ Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria
When selecting our local production partners, we prioritize fair wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small, family-run businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced artisans of legal age. In particular, older people who can no longer work in agriculture benefit from jobs in handicrafts, allowing them to use the skills they learned in their youth to earn a living and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to create something meaningful and earn a living through this work. Because all steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates virtually no greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through Regula.
