➤ The sustainable main material: clay

Clay is a natural raw material made of fine clay minerals and is found mainly near water sources such as rivers, lakes, and coastlines. After extraction, the clay is purified and mixed with water, making it smooth and easily malleable. Craftspeople use it to create vases, bowls, and a variety of everyday objects. The pieces are then fired at high temperatures, which gives them strength and durability. This process makes clay a long-lasting and versatile material.

➤ Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria

When selecting our local production partners, we prioritize fair wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small, family-run businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. All of them are experienced, adult craftspeople. Older people, especially those no longer able to work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in these crafts, as they can use their skills, acquired early in life, to earn a living and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living. Because all work is done by hand, the production process generates virtually no greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the businesses.

➤ The production process: From raw material to finished vase

For our Nusa vases, experienced artisans in Central Java, Indonesia, rely on a time-honored technique. First, a specially prepared liquid clay is carefully poured into a handcrafted mold, creating the vase's distinctive ring-like silhouette. Once formed, the vase is coated with two layers of white paint to create a smooth, flawless finish. Each vase takes approximately one hour to complete, with precision and artistry evident in every step.
