➤ The sustainable main material: banana fiber

Banana fibers are natural, untreated plant fibers with a wonderfully natural feel. This abundant, renewable resource comes from banana plants widely cultivated in Indonesia. As the bananas grow, their fibrous bark peels away from the trunk, is then collected, and dried in the sun for about a week, naturally developing its rich brown color. The individual strips are then rolled into the characteristic strands, approximately 6 mm thick, which our production partners in Java then craft into traditional basketry.

This wall decoration is handmade in Java, Indonesia.

When selecting our local production partners, we prioritize fair wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small, family-run businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. All of them are experienced, adult craftspeople. Older people, especially those no longer able to work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in these crafts, as they can use their skills, acquired early in life, to earn a living and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living. Because all work is done by hand, the production process generates virtually no greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the businesses.

➤ The production process: from raw material to finished wall decoration

For our wall decorations, the experienced artisans at our production partner in the Indonesian province of Central Java patiently and skillfully weave banana fiber into a hand-formed frame of thin iron rods. This ensures they retain their stable, round shape. The delicate star pattern is then embroidered onto the white cotton fabric with a needle. The entire process of creating a wall decoration takes approximately two hours.
