➤ The sustainable main material: banana fiber

Banana fibers are natural, untreated plant fibers with a wonderfully natural feel. This abundant, renewable resource comes from banana plants widely cultivated in Indonesia. As the bananas grow, their fibrous bark peels away from the trunk, is then collected, and dried in the sun for about a week, naturally developing its rich brown color. The individual strips are then rolled into the characteristic strands, approximately 6 mm thick, which our production partners in Java then craft into traditional basketry.

➤ Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria

This basket is handmade in Java, Indonesia.

When selecting our local production partners, we prioritize fair wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small, family-run businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. All of them are experienced, adult craftspeople. Older people, especially those no longer able to work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in these crafts, as they can use their skills, acquired early in life, to earn a living and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living. Because all work is done by hand, the production process generates virtually no greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the businesses.


➤ The production process: from raw material to finished basket

For our baskets, experienced artisans at our production partner in the Indonesian province of Central Java carefully and meticulously weave strands of banana fiber into a specially crafted metal frame that defines the basket's precise shape and size. To ensure a stable and durable structure, the banana fiber is secured with transparent nylon thread. On average, it takes about two hours to complete each basket.
