➤ The sustainable main material: clay
Clay is a natural raw material made of fine clay minerals and is found mainly near water sources such as rivers, lakes, and coastlines. After extraction, the clay is purified and mixed with water, making it smooth and easily malleable. Craftspeople use it to create vases, bowls, and a variety of everyday objects. The pieces are then fired at high temperatures, which gives them strength and durability. This process makes clay a long-lasting and versatile material.
Other material: rattan
➤ Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria
When selecting our local production partners, we prioritize fair wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small, family-run businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. All of them are experienced, adult craftspeople. Older people, especially those no longer able to work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in these crafts, as they can use their skills, acquired early in life, to earn a living and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful and earn a good living. Because all work is done by hand, the production process generates virtually no greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the businesses.
➤ The production process: From raw material to finished vase
For our Tuban vases, experienced artisans at our production partners in Central Java, Indonesia, shape the clay on a potter's wheel to achieve the desired round form. After firing, several small holes are carefully drilled around the opening to attach the decorative rattan weave. The vase is then coated with two layers of white paint. The entire production process takes approximately 1.5 hours per vase.
